baby name game 2.0

it’s finally that time.

time to guess what outrageous name we have come up with for baby girl number two. and ya’ll better be in top form for this one because i have it on good authority that our previous name champion (christina) is going for a clean sweep.

to help with the guessing this go 'round, i’m offering up some insight into my relationship with names. first off, my own name is emily anne young wheeler. solid. simple. common. and, as i felt for most of my life, boring. in fact, i absolutely hated my name until falling in love with the lower case “e” at the age of thirteen (thank you, mr. cummings).

so naturally, having some angst about my own “normal” name, my naming tendencies tend to go a *bit* too far to the other extreme. here’s a sample of the most notorious names (according to bryan) that i came up with for summer’s sister: lux, bay, ever (it was very hard for me to let go of that one), and v (yes, just v).

bryan’s role in the whole baby naming process is usually just to reign me in. he’s out there stumping for the julies and audreys whilst i’m lost in never-never land with the azures and callas, and somewhere in the middle (well, maybe not quite middle…) we agree.

so without further delay,

here are the clues:

1) begins with the letter A (anna, you should have an advantage here)
2) has fewer than seven letters
3) according to the SSA, in its most popular year, it barely made the top 1,000 names
4) despite its apparently low popularity, bryan and i know three people with this name – each in a very different age group

here are the rules:

1) between now and monday, june 15th, leave a comment on this post with ONE guess at baby wheeler’s name (if more than one guess is given, only the first guess will count)
2) be sure to look at previous comments because only the first person to guess the correct name will win
3) as always, we will not post comments from people we don’t know, so no secret identities please
4) if we find our friends and family to be totally missing the mark, we will re-post the game next week with additional clues, so keep second guesses in the back of your mind

wanna know what you’re playing for?

first and foremost, the coveted baby naming crown, but additionally, your choice of:

1) cold stone gift certificate
2) see’s candies gift certificate
3) jamba juice gift certificate

(if, perchance, my rural and foreign friends, you do not live near any of these establishments, we’ll work with you and come up with an equally desirable treat.)

all right people, get your name on!

adrian--but I hope you realize that that is Anna's brother's name

also, Anna didn't approve that guess. So she might offer her own.

Only one guess? There's two that I can't stop thinking about.

'Avi' will have to be my official choice - it even has your V in it.

I'll kick myself if you choose my second choice.

My guess is Ava. Emily, you've sure put the pressure on...let's hope that I'm right and don't have to pass on my name champion reigns! :)

emilee, we are kindreds. Ever was a choice for elliott and penny both. actually it was everleigh and I planned on calling her ever but we moved her and I met Averly and it was to close to everleigh and there you have it.
but my guess is Astrid.
Because of the SSN thing.
But my vote is Avalon.

I only want bragging rights if I win.

My guess is ‘Autumn’.

I’m sure that is too predictable for Emily, but let me fantasize that I’ll someday get to name another baby…

i too thought of Ava (before I read the comments)- Christina will just have to share!

I love all the fun names!
Averly's name actually started as Ever (after a movie/TV star) but my hubby put his foot down. I tried for Everleigh, but again all he could think about was the Everly brothers. We compromised on Averly - which is very close to my grandma's name anyway. :)

NO WAY on Ava, because that's pretty common these days! So with that said, there's a new champion to be crowned this year! :)

I do like the Astrid guess though . . . that's cute.

I'm going to go with Adelle, although if you're still looking, I know this cute woman named Adria.

This is Spencer & Thi.

Thi votes Averi.
Spencer votes Allyssa.

Does that count? I guess go with Averi if you'll count us together.

I'm like you Emily, Kami is like Bryan. It makes for a long name choosing process.
PS. Wow, I love Ever. How did you let that one go?

Ava-- is what first came to my mind-- I know people old and young with the name Ava-- I love it-- !

How about Avery.

My name for your new baby girl should be April Eyleena or Aileena Wheeler.

This is Jodi and I think the name is Anabel.

OK...I've pondered this all day and I'm really feeling good about my selection. I have even done my research, gone to the SSN website and sorry folks, but Ava was #5 last year for girl's names....who knew? So, my final choice is: AFTON. I also know three different people with this name from three different generations. I like it, I feel good about it and I'll take the Jambo Juice Gift Certificate!

Yours Truly, Nancy Ann Benson Perry (my boring name, but I like it) :)

P.S. We had friends in Texas whose oldest was Summer, then they had an Autumn, Skyler and Starry. Oh yes, and their dog was Stormy. Mindy, maybe you are on to something here!

My guess is Adena. I love that you do this by the way. I think that the Afton guess is a really good one too.

I will through in my hat for my new great granddaughter’s Name:

Autumn Emily or Spring Young.

And I bet I am not even close; whatever you choose will be lovely.

Peter chooses Amberly

Cindy chooses Addie

We accept the challenge with Addison...Although Adrian would be cool because she could marry Rocky. Adrian...I DID IT!!!

Holly said...

Well, since I am late to the game (and the name I would have guessed has already been mentioned), I will say Afton. Because I like it. But my word verification is Ulsho. Maybe you could consider it for a middle name.

Katy said...

This is Katy Nulph and I think the name is Alicia or Alesha.

Richard and I guess Adele. We are so confident in our guess that we aren't even splitting our vote. Can't wait to hear the winning name...and I am sure it is beautiful!

I've made an exhaustive search of least common girl's names (beginning with an A) over the last 100 years. The are some 40 finalists including Abba Abiola....blah blah......... Adabel ................ blah blah...... Ariane Arista Arly Arsenia Arwen Asha Auburn Aundrea Aura Averill

My selection: Ariane. A pretty name; less than 7 letters; begins with A; captures the ever popular "ane" that is a part of our family legacy. How do I collect my certificate?

I made a guess a few days ago but either my comment was screened out (?!) or didn't make it to you. My guess is Azalea. and thanks for giving me some good ideas for later!

Seriously. No one's guessed Avril yet. It's perfect. Frenchy. Optional career as an an angry teen baladeer. That's my guess.

Katie said...

so i've been told to change my guess - adeline. i don't think that was guessed yet. :)

Kimberme said...

well, if this isn't the name you were going to pick I am sure you will now change it because it is the right name...Aida Wheeler. Yep that's her name, and if it isn't it should be hers, or her younger sister's so keep it for your next if you need to, but you will see the baby will be born and you will say, oh, it IS Aida!

Keri-Ann said...

AURELIE - French origin, meaning "golden"

All the guesses so far are lovely!

Arsenic would be a great name, ok yeah no.
